U-boat - Sea Wolves

Published on 23 Feb 2021 / In Documentaries

A documentary about the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.

The Battle of the Atlantic is the longest battle ever fought. Fighting commenced at the start of the war in Sept 1939 and continued nonstop until the German surrender in May 1945.

The battle had highs and lows for both the Germans and the British and Americans. At one point the Germans were sinking so many merchant ships that Britain's economic situation became dire and the British government stopped talking about the war altogether and started talking about more elementary things such as Britain's food security, launching the "dig for victory" campaign. At another point, German U-Boat losses became so extreme that they lost a quarter of their U-Boat fleet in a single month (May 1943).

Ultimately, the enigma program and the development of new technologies like SONAR gave victory to the western allies.
