You could say New Zealand was the last place dominated by dinosaurs.

NZ's isolation - like Madagascar, made it a last hold out of feathered dinosaurs that had reclaimed their ancient niches on land due to lack of competition from placental mammals. The Haast Eagle would have reclaimed the role of theropod dinosaurs like the velociraptor had it been given more ages to grow larger and adapt to running more than flying. It was likely a tree-dwelling, forest ambush predator most of the time, one that would glide from the trees and pounce on it's two-legged prey - which would eventually include humans. The giant Eagle only needed to wound the giant ground birds with it's knife sized talons or take a large chunk of flesh with it's beak to doom it's prey to bleeding or infection - or just hunt the young which would eventually include human children. As one could expect, there was no way humans could live in peace around these dangerous predators, as they were natural competitors for the same prey. In the end, the Haast Eagles were surely forced to hunt the humans that wiped out their food source. Tragic.
