(14 Aug 1998) T/I: 10:45:30
STORY: Swiss-Nazi Agreement
LOCATION: New York, USA
Private Swiss banks, Jewish groups and Holocaust survivors reached an historical $1.25 billion settlement Wednesday (12/8) on bank holdings linked to Nazi Germany.
Switzerland had been accused of buying large amounts of gold stolen by the Nazis during World War II, and of refusing to hand over deposits made by Jews killed in the Holocaust after the war had ended.
The accord followed a court hearing in New York where a lawsuit against Credit Suisse and UBS had been filed.
